An Indiana University Police Department officer found dead near his squad car early Saturday is believed to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

IU Police Chief Keith Cash said the body of Officer James Lerg, 30, was found about 5:39 a.m. by other officers near his squad car, in the Indiana University Memorial Stadium parking lot.  Lerg had been on duty at the time and had failed to respond to radio calls.

“This is a very sad day for our department,” Cash said. “Our hearts and prayers are with the Lerg family. We will all miss him very much.”

At the request of Chief Cash, the Bloomington Police Department is conducting the investigation.  Cash said there was no immediate indication of homicide, but the investigation will continue and IUPD will assisting in any way possible.

Officer Lerg had been employed by IUPD for 4 years.
