Doug Johnson joined the IUPD in 2012 and became deputy chief of the IUPD-Bloomington division in 2014. On January 1st, 2018 he was appointed as the chief of the IUPD-Indianapolis division. In this position, he provides strategic and operational leadership in a variety of areas, including division budgeting and relationships with other law enforcement agencies.

In 1987, Johnson enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he continues to serve today as a colonel and division chief of staff in the U.S. Army Reserve. His unit comprises more than 2,500 soldiers who undertake a range of civil affairs missions in Europe and Africa. Johnson also has intelligence and civil affairs experience in Central Asia, Africa and Europe. His law enforcement career includes 20 years as a municipal police officer, where he spent six years as deputy director of the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center. He retired from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in 2011.
