Indiana University is committed to alerting the university community about both immediate dangers and ongoing threats, and providing you with information and tools to help you stay safe.
Emergency Communication
Safety-related notifications from IU
There are three different types of notifications that may be used to communicate public safety-related messages at IU:
- Emergency alerts (IU Notify)
- Crime notices
- Public safety advisories
Each type of notification has a different purpose and is sent via a specific method of communication.
- Emergency alerts (IU Notify)
Emergency alerts—also known as IU Notify alerts—are sent when the following circumstances exist:
- A confirmed dangerous situation or emergency exists.
- The situation is considered to be an immediate threat to an IU campus.
- Sending an alert will not jeopardize assisting victims or compromise law enforcement/emergency responder efforts.
Emergency alerts can be sent for weather emergencies, criminal emergencies, or other hazards that could threaten the health or safety of members of the IU community.
Emergency alerts are sent via multiple modes of communication (text, email, phone, website banners, and more) to ensure the information is received quickly.
- Crime notices
The second type of notification is called a crime notice. Crime notices will be sent by email when the following circumstances exist:
- A Clery Reportable Crime is reported to have
occurred. - The crime
occurred on Clery Reportable Property. - The situation is considered to represent a serious or continuing threat to students or employees.
Crime notice distribution is limited to email only.
The email will contain a brief description of the details to the crime and provide you with information on how to protect yourself from similar crimes.
- A Clery Reportable Crime is reported to have
- Public safety advisories
The third type of notification is called a public safety advisory. Public safety advisories may be sent by email when the following circumstances exist:
- A Non-Clery Reportable Crime is reported to have occurred.
- The crime occurred outside of IU’s Clery Reportable Property.
- There is a safety concern that does not involve criminal acts but is considered to represent a serious or continuing threat to students or employees.
Public safety advisories are sent by email only.
The email will contain a brief description of the details of the crime or non-criminal situation and provide the IU community with information on how to protect yourself from similar crimes or how to keep the IU community safe under the situation described.

We’ll walk with you
We also offer a safety escort service on each campus. Give us a call anytime you need to walk on campus and want an officer to walk you safely to your destination.
Guardian safety app
Staff, faculty, and students at Indiana University can now use the Guardian safety app to access personal safety resources and to reach police more easily.
The free app is available in the Apple Store and on Google Play by searching for "Rave Guardian." You must have a cellphone number listed in IU Notify to log in.
Here are four features you probably didn't know the app offers:
Safe walk timer
Here's how it works: Send your friend a message that you're taking a 20-minute walk. (Your preferred person doesn't need to have the app installed -- it can pull the information from your cellphone contacts.) When the time is up, you get a reminder to let the friend know you've arrived safely, and they get an alert that you should've arrived at your destination.
Only your chosen social guardians know your location when you are using the safe walk timer.
Quick access to nonemergency numbers and websites
The app gives you access to important nonemergency numbers, such as the IU Police Department and various campus wellness contacts. The app isn't intended to replace emergency contacts -- staff, faculty and students should call 911 in case of emergency. The app does have buttons to call 911 and the IU Police Department directly.
Ability to send anonymous tips to police
You can choose whether to send a tip anonymously each time you send in a text or photo tip. To send text or photo tips anonymously, tap the "IUPD -- Tips Via Text" button and slide the button to "Go Anonymous," which will cause your screen to go to a dark background.
If you choose to send a tip anonymously, the IU Police Department will not be able to see your location, name, phone number or any other identifying information about you. If you do not slide the "Go Anonymous" button, your location (if you have location services turned on), name, phone number and profile information are displayed on a map from the IU Police Department when you send a tip.
An inbox for IU Notify emergency alerts, crime notices, and public safety advisories
Because the Guardian app is intended to be another means of reaching people during an emergency, IU Notify emergency alerts are sent directly to the app as a push notification.

- What types of messages will I get through IU Notify?
IU's emergency notification system will be used to announce and provide guidance in an emergency or critical incident and to communicate relevant updates. Generally, an emergency is any ongoing situation that involves death, serious injury, or threat of death or serious injury to people; significant damage to university facilities, property, and or data; or significant disruption of university operations.
Test messages will be sent through IU Notify at least annually to ensure that the system is working properly.
- For IU emergency notifications, how do I update my contact information for IU Notify?
The IU Notify service is for current students, faculty, and staff. If IU Notify isn't available to you, you likely have former status and are not eligible for such notifications. Additionally, you cannot use this process to opt into text messaging for departmental cell phones; for special handling of departmental cell phones, contact the Support Center.
To review and update your personal Indiana University contact information for notification in the event of an emergency:
- Go to Emergency Notification Settings (IU Notify) in One.IU, and click Start.
- Add, edit, or remove phone numbers to receive emergency alerts via call and/or text message. Note the following:
- You cannot edit your campus phone number in the IU Notify app. If you have a private office number at which you want to receive alerts, enter it under your required campus phone number in the "Landlines" section.
- You can add mobile phone numbers to either the "Cellular" or "Landlines" list, but only devices listed on the "Cellular" list can receive text messages. (If you list the same number in both lists, it will be contacted twice.)
- Alerts will go out to all numbers listed, and emergency messages can occur at any time.
- Choose how you would like to receive notifications for all devices in the "Cellular" list: Text and voice alerts, Text messages only, or Voice alerts only. (Phone numbers in the "Landlines" list will only receive voice alerts.) Standard phone call and text messaging rates apply.
- Your IU email address will always receive alerts. Enter any additional email addresses at which to be notified under your IU email address.
- Choose your campus. You can select any additional campuses for which you'd like to receive alerts.
- Read the user agreement (copied below) and check the box acknowledging that you have read and understand the risks of opting out of alert methods. Then click Save preferences.
If you choose to remove delivery methods for emergency notifications, you must acknowledge responsibility for life safety issues when limiting delivery of alerts by the university. The university does not recommend opting out of any delivery method because emergencies can eliminate delivery methods, such as oversaturated cell phone towers prohibiting voice and/or SMS text delivery to cell phones.
You will be prompted yearly to verify your contact information.
- How many methods of contacts should I list?
The key to successful communication during emergency situations is the accuracy and variety of contact information in the system. As such, Indiana University is working hard to encourage everyone to verify, update, and add his or her contact information in the IU Notify system.
In an emergency, Indiana University will send notifications to any or all of the following phone numbers and email addresses currently on file for you.
IU Notify allows for SMS text delivery to cell phone numbers and the option to receive both voice and text, text only, or voice only to those numbers.
- Can I sign up for text messages if I do not have a text messaging plan with my cell phone service provider?
Yes, you can sign up to receive text messages even if you do not have a text messaging plan on your cell phone. However, you should check with your cell phone carrier to find out if text messages will indeed make it to your phone and if there are any fees associated with delivery of text messages.
- What should I do if I signed up and did not receive a text message, e-mail or phone call when a test was conducted?
Report the particular situation to iunotify@iu.edu and we will investigate your phone numbers and what was reported for your numbers. In addition, you should ensure you have selected the text messages option, otherwise, you will not get the text message.
- Can I unsubscribe (opt out, remove myself) completely from IU Notify?
IU Notify opt-out acknowledgment statement:
If you choose to "opt-out" of any IU Notify delivery method, you increase your risk of not being notified. You will not receive alerts via those methods for any campus emergency or urgent situation, including but not limited to campus closure, class cancellation, or a specific threat to your safety, such as an active shooter. There are risks inherent in choosing to opt-out of delivery methods, including the risk that you will not receive critical communication from the university and therefore, you may not have necessary information to stay safe in emergency or threatening situations. If you have any responsibilities for the welfare of staff, faculty, students and/or visitors on campus, or supervise any such individuals on campus, it is important that you maintain multiple delivery points (i.e., cell and home phone) so you will receive necessary information in an emergency.
- Can the general public or parents sign up to receive IU Notify messages?
No, the general public (including parents) cannot sign up for IU Notify.
- Can I get alerts for more than one campus?
Yes. You can subscribe for alerts to as many campuses as you wish. Visit the IU Notify page in One.IU to sign up.
- Why did I receive an IU Notify message about a campus that I am not on?
Your contact information is pulled from the information contained in your student record (for students) and your HR record (for faculty and staff). As a result, you will have a record for each campus appearing in your official HR or student record.
For instance, if you are a full-time student at IU Southeast and a distance student at IU Bloomington, you will have a record for both campuses and you will receive alerts for both campuses. You can now select your "home" campus by deselecting your current home campus and selecting at least one campus.
- What is the IU Notify address that I should look for on e-mail and text messages?
IU Notify alerts will have the following headers and email addresses for each campus:
- IUPUC Columbus: alert@iupuc.edu
- IUPUI Indianapolis: alert@iupui.edu
- IU Bloomington: alert@indiana.edu
- IU East: alert@iue.edu
- IU Kokomo: alert@iuk.edu
- IU Northwest: alert@iun.edu
- IU South Bend: alert@iusb.edu
- IU Southeast: alert@ius.edu
IU Notify alerts have been set up to bypass IU-managed spam filters, but may be caught by spam filters offered by other e-mail providers. To ensure that alert messages reach you be sure to add the following e-mail address for your campus below to your list of safe senders.
In some cases, you may receive these messages from an @getrave.com address. This functionality is rare in Rave's system (IU's contracted vendor), but can happen occasionally. Messages should still be treated as real and authentic.
For text messages, all messages will contain the carrier code of 67283 -or- 226787.
