Who can use it? The app is available for use by all currently registered Indiana University students and employees of the university. Subscribers must use an IU email address to login. top

Will I receive IU-Notify emergency alerts? Yes. IU-Notify emergency alerts are sent directly to the Guardian app as a push notification. It is intended to be another means of reaching people during an emergency. We encourage all faculty, staff and students who have not already done so to opt-in for RAVE ALERT text and voice messages on their mobile device at https://go.iu.edu/notify. Location services must be on. top
Always tracked? No. Your privacy is of the utmost importance. You can only be located if you have asked for help. Guardian location information is only enabled when you choose to make an emergency call or send a tip. Only your chosen social guardians know your location when using the safe walk timer. top
Does the safe walk timer notify police? No. Your social guardians are friends and family. When you select a personal contact to be your guardian and your timer expires, they will be notified. top
Can friends or family be notified? Yes. If you use the safe walk timer, you can choose guardians from your phone's contacts.They will have the capability to track your status. The guardian will receive a notification via text message when you request them as a guardian and they must accept your request. top
What if I forget about it? When using the safe walk timer, the user will receive a reminder text message five minutes before the timer expires. If it expires, a message immediately goes to your chosen guardian(s) and they can call your cell phone. top
Are anonymous tips really anonymous? You can choose whether to send a tip anonymously each time you send in a text or photo tip. To send text or photo tips anonymously, tap the “IUPD – Tips Via Text” button and slide the button to “Go Anonymous,” which will cause your screen to go to a dark background. If you choose to send a tip anonymously, IU Police Department will not be able to see your location, name, phone number or any other identifying information about you. If you do not slide the “Go Anonymous” button, your location, name, phone number and profile information is displayed on a map from the IU Police Department when you send a tip. top
Is my profile secure? Yes. Rave Mobile Safety (the provider of the Guardian app) uses the latest in security technologies and processes to ensure that all of your information is secure and private. Rave also undergoes regular security audits to ensure the data is secure. top
Off campus? Yes. The IUPD – Tips via Text feature works regardless of your location; however, if you have an emergency at an off-campus location, you should dial 9-1-1. If you send a tip that is not on campus, the information will be forwarded to the off-campus law enforcement agency. top
Contacting police without the app? Absolutely. When on campus, you can contact IUPD at 812-855-4111 or use any blue light phone. You can go to the police station at 1469 E. 17th St. When you are off-campus, you should call 9-1-1 for emergency assistance. top
Cell phone providers? The basic profile features of Guardian work on any iPhone or Android smartphone running on any U.S.-based mobile carrier network with the app installed. Guardian can locate most smartphone devices on the AT&T, Sprint and Verizon networks. Even if Guardian cannot determine your phone’s location, all other profile information will be made available to the IU Police Department when you use Guardian. top
Push notifications? We recommend that you allow notification from Guardian. This will alert you when your timer is about to expire, or when someone has requested you as a guardian. top
Location accuracy? Yes. Factors include but are not limited to:
- whether you are calling from inside a building or a “dead spot"
- the strength of your cell signal, such as proximity of cell towers or satellites
- whether your phone is GPS enabled and the type/quality of your phone
- carrier and signal
If possible, you should provide detailed location information via text or voice. This will enable IUPD personnel to reach you quickly when Guardian is activated. top
No longer a student, employee? No. Once you are no longer a member of the Indiana University community and are removed from the IU-Notify system, you are no longer eligible to use the Guardian app. top
New number? If you change your cell phone number, you must update your number in IU-Notify by going to one.iu.edu and searching for IU-Notify. This will change it in your app. You cannot update your cell number in the Guardian app. top
No cell service? Yes. Guardian will also work with Wi-Fi. However, the features are limited. You will still be able to send a tip or use the safe walk timer. However, when you make an emergency call, a voice call will not be placed. The Call 9-1-1 feature in the app works only with cell phone service. top
