In order to use radioactive material and machine produced radiation at IUPUI, researchers need to fulfill the series of requirements presented below.
1. New User Authorization
Every individual who wishes to be an authorized user of radioactive material must submit an A-3 Form - Authorization to Use Radioactive Materials to the Radiation Safety Committee Office at firstname.lastname@example.org. This form must be signed by both the individual seeking authorization and by the Permit Holder (PH) under which he/she will be working. IUPUI Radiation Safety Forms are found on IU's Research website.
Once the A-3 Form is submitted and reviewed, an email will be sent outlining the training that will be required before full authorization is granted. This training may include the Radiation Safety Orientation and/or the Radiation Safety Course.
To view, schedule, and register for these sessions, see the Radiation Safety Training Sessions page.
2. Initial Radiation Safety Training
All new radioactive material users must attend the Radiation Safety Course. This 4-hour course will cover fundamentals of radiation, radiation safety, and procedures that are specific to IUPUI. New users are granted preliminary approval, and can only work under direct supervision of a fully approved authorized user until they have completed the required training.
3. New Permit Application
Any individual who wishes to establish a new radionuclide use permit must do so by submitting the applicable forms to the Radiation Safety Office. All required forms should be submitted together as a completed packet. The appropriate forms are dependent on the type of research being conducted. Please contact the Radiation Safety Office for assistance in completing these forms. IUPUI Radiation Safety Forms are found on IU's Research website.
