Drug testing
Fire Safety and Loss Prevention provides drug testing services for all Indiana University-employed vehicle operators with a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Federal and state laws define when a CDL is required.
Fire Safety and Loss Control's CDL program for all Indiana University locations includes:
- Pre–employment testing
- Random drug and alcohol tests
- Post accident testing (if the accident involves injury or either vehicle needs towed from the scene because of damages)
What to do if a CDL driver is arrested, involved in an accident or hospitalized
If any of a CDL driver is arrested for a violation involving drugs or alcohol, immediately contact:
- Scott Gillispie, Fire Safety and Loss Prevention Director, at gillesps@iu.edu concerning CDL issues, and
- Heather Teague at hteague@iu.edu to have their license checked.
If any CDL drivers are involved in an accident, they must immediately (from the accident site, if they are not incapacitated by injury) contact Scott Gillispie, Fire Safety and Loss Prevention Director, at gillesps@iu.edu or 812-276-3510 or Greg Jeffers, Fire Safety and Loss Prevention Inspector, gajeffer@iu.edu or 812–361–5463 to arrange for post–accident testing.
If a driver is transported to the hospital and if possible given their injuries, the hospital should be asked to collect samples for CDL testing.
"Accident" is defined as
- An occurrence involving a commercial motor vehicle operating on a highway in interstate or intrastate commerce which results in:
- a fatality;
- Bodily injury to a person who, as a result of the injury, immediately receives medical treatment away from the scene of the accident; or
- One or more motor vehicles incurring disabling damage as a result of the accident, requiring the motor vehicle(s) to be transported away from the scene by a tow truck or other motor vehicle.
- The term "accident" does not include:
- An occurrence involving only boarding and alighting from a stationary motor vehicle; or
- An occurrence involving only the loading or unloading of cargo.

Drug and alcohol Testing
If a supervisor has reasonable suspicion that an employee is on–the–job and under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or as part of a continued employment agreement with an employee periodic drug or alcohol testing is required, the supervisor should:
- Report the issue to their supervisor.
- Contact IU Human Resources for directions.
If IU Human Resources has approved, the employee may be enrolled in our drug and alcohol testing program. Random testing can be arranged.
