CRIME NOTICE - REPORTED MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT

IU Indianapolis Crime Notice:
April 23, 2025

In compliance with the federal Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, a crime notice is being issued for completed and attempted motor vehicle thefts.

REPORTED OFFENSE:

During the month of April, the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) received reports of attempted and/or completed motor vehicle thefts (MVT). On the dates below, the suspect(s) attempted to steal vehicles and completed thefts of vehicles. . Please see additional information in this notice.

TIME AND LOCATION OF OFFENSE:

  • April 6, at Methodist Hospital, 1701 N. Senate Ave., a gray Dodge Challenger and an orange Dodge Charger were stolen from the Capital View Garage.
  • April 16, at the IU Pathology Lab Garage, an unknown vehicle was reported entered and the center console open with the seat back position moved.
  • April 20, at Methodist Hospital, lot Q, a Hyundai was entered by breaking the window. The steering column had damage synonymous with vehicle theft.
  • April 21, at Methodist Hospital, a 2016 Hyundai Tucson was stolen from lot 25.

The offenses occurred on hospital property, however, for Clery Act geography, are considered on-campus. The IU Health Police Department and Indianapolis Metro Police Department are investigating. The reports were provided to IUPD by the respective agencies.

SUSPECT:

There are two suspects associated with the April 20 incident. They are two Black males who exited the IndyGo bus around 4:40 pm. One male was wearing a mask, a dark colored (dark blue and dark red) jacket, gloves (possibly with skeleton design), a black backpack, and dark pants. The second male was wearing a mask, a gray hoodie with the hood up, and blue jeans. Both males were checking the lots in the area. At 4:56 the first male broke into a vehicle while the second male stood on 18th street as a lookout. The first male exited the vehicle through the driver's door, and they both headed east crossing Illinois street.  

 

Racial descriptors alone are not a valid reason to profile or cast suspicion on an individual. In cases of serious crime such as this we may include them only as part of the totality of circumstances, if it may reasonably assist in the identification of the perpetrators.

SAFETY TIPS:

In an effort to keep yourself and others safe, please consider the following safety tips:

  • If you own a Hyundai or Kia vehicle, contact the car maker to find out if you qualify to receive the free anti-theft software upgrade.
  • Do not lend your keys to anyone you do not know and trust.
  • Always hide valuables and money so they cannot be seen through windows.
  • Park in well-lit, regularly frequented areas if possible, and lock all doors and roll up windows.
  • Always report suspicious behavior. IU has blue light emergency phones located throughout the campus that connect directly to IUPD.
  • Install a steering wheel locking device. 
  • Install quality video surveillance cameras and alarms. 
  • Install a GPS tracking device. 
  • Never leave your car running. 
  • Keep information, such as the make, model, model year, license plate and Vehicle Identification Number or serial numbers for bikes/scooters accessible in the event your property is stolen.
