Welcome Kara Sarchet
Hello, my name is Kara Sarchet. I am the new Biological Safety Specialist. My responsibilities include reviewing Institutional Biosafety Committee protocols and protocol amendments, serving on IACUC, and performing biosafety laboratory inspections. I am originally from Illinois, but I have spent the last eight years living in Indianapolis.
I have a B.S. in Chemistry from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in Molecular Cell Biology from Washington University in Saint Louis. My thesis work focused on fatty acid metabolism in vascular smooth muscle cells. After graduating, I did several postdoctoral fellowships here at IUPUI to expand my training and experience. I have worked in many different genetic models of human disease to understand molecular mechanisms of disease processes. I have worked in in vivo and in vitro systems employing a plethora of molecular techniques.
I became interested in a career in Biosafety while working in industry and serving on safety committees. I was also inspired by my husband’s career in law enforcement. Observing his experiences has helped me understand that a career in safety is really about helping people and education. I am happy to join a great team of very knowledgeable scientists with the goal of promoting habitual safety best practices and providing instruction for safely handling biological hazards in research.
