Across Indiana, IUPD officers have been busy shopping. The reason? To provide a joyful holiday experience that underprivileged children may not have otherwise.
Indiana University Police Department campus divisions from all over the state participated in their local “Shop with a Cop” events earlier this month. These events are organized every December so that police officers can shop with needy families to buy clothes and toys for their children. The “Shop with a Cop” events are fully funded by community donations, while officers from many different police jurisdictions volunteer their time to work them. Thousands of dollars have been donated, and hundreds of kids have already benefitted from this year’s events – but for officers, it’s about more than just the numbers.
“I’ve done this event for several years and it’s a really nice way to connect with local kids and families,” said IUPD-Bloomington Officer Hilary Aydt.
IUPD officers participate in “Shop with a Cop” every year to build and maintain healthy relationships with their respective campus and community. Because of this, families are not only leaving stores this holiday season with full carts, but also full hearts.
