Types of personal information IU may collect from you

Information you give to IU

Information that is collected by IU is classified in a four-tier system that ensures data is protected in accordance with its sensitivity level. If you would like more complete information on data classification by domain, see the Data Handling Matrix.

Device information

When you login with your username, we collect personal information and how you use our services. This includes the information you provide to us as well as device information such as device, IP address, MAC address, Device ID, Device location, OS, browser types and versions, whether the device has a passcode set and biometrics available to help us secure access to IU services.

Information on how you use our services

We collect all your interactions when you browse around our websites.

Use of personal information

IU may use your personal information to:

  • Deliver our information technology resources and services to you
  • Process your requests
  • Understand the services you use and personalize them to your preferences
  • Display advertising that is tailored to you
  • Recommend services or content that might interest you

Disclosing information to third parties

We sometimes use the services of other companies to assist in delivering our services and supporting our mission at IU. For example, contracting with services such as Canvas, Microsoft 365, or other services that send you email about our programs.

Indiana University strives to work with entities who agree to protect the security and privacy of your personal information the same way we do. We only share the least amount of information that the third party needs to complete the task we have contracted them to do.
