Basic Field Training Officer School

Course description

This course is designed to provide certified law enforcement officers with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to serve effectively as Field Training Officers. The course explores the history and purpose of law enforcement training, with a focus on a modified San Jose field training model.

Participants will gain a strong foundation in documentation procedures using standard evaluation guidelines.  Emphasis is placed on the principles of adult learning and various methods of instruction that promote student engagement and skill retention. Through a combination of lecture, discussion and participation in scenario-based training, attendees will learn to objectively evaluate performance, design training plans, and deliver student-centered feedback.

Upon successful completion, participants will earn 24 hours of Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board in-service training credit and a certificate of completion.

This course is offered to certified law enforcement officers who are current or aspiring Field Training Officers.

Location and parking:
IUPD Ott Building, Conference Room A215, 922 Indiana Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46202. Enter through Parking Lot 97 entrance and check in at the reception window. This is a secure building.
Parking is available at Lockefield Garage (915 Wishard Blvd) and Wilson Street Garage (811 N. Wilson St.). Hourly rates apply.
