Executive Protection School

Course description

Upon completion of Executive Protection training, individuals will understand the executive protection mission and have a level of competency that will allow a smooth transition into supporting a protection detail.

The training will cover the following aspects of the protective mission:

Introduction to Executive Protection
Protocol and etiquette
Special weapons and equipment
Threat assessments
Advance operations
Dismounted formations
Formation attack recognition
Vehicle mounts and dismounts
Motorcade operations
Attack recognition for motorcades
Tactical driving
Case studies
Practical exercises in all aspects of the protective mission
Attack on Principal drills

Applicable students should be current law enforcement officers. All students will be on full-duty status as this course is physical and requires a lot of movement.

Note: civilians currently employed or preparing for employment on protection details may be admitted on a case-by-case basis.

July 13-17, 2026

Class sessions: Monday, July 13 through Thursday, July 16, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; and Friday, July 17, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

Location and parking

Marion County Fairgrounds, 7300 Troy Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46239.

Enter Gate 4 at 2850 Fisher Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46239. The training building is the last building on the right on Main Street. All of the training for this course will take place at the training building.

Hotel lodging will not be provided. There are several hotel options within a 10-minute drive of the training location.

Parking is free and available across from the training building.

Course Materials:

Writing utensil and notebook for note taking
Concealed carry holster (to fit Glock 17/19)
Radio and radio earpiece (students from the same agency will train together as much as possible)
Extra magazine pouch
Concealed (plainclothes) handcuff pouch
Sunglasses
Water will be provided
Students are responsible for their own meals and snacks

Attire:

Monday - Thursday

Casual Clothes

Lace up shoes (tennis shoes, hiking boots, etc.)
Jeans or tac pants
T-shirt AND another layer such as a shirt, vest or pullover
Hat, if desired

Friday

Men

Suit with tie and lace up dress shoes

Women

Pant suit, no tie, and dress shoes (No heels)

Instructor

Lt. Todd Wellmann is a 25.5-year veteran of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department with extensive expertise in executive and dignitary protection operations. He coordinated the IMPD Dignitary Protection Unit, leading security planning and execution for presidential and vice-presidential visits while working closely with agencies such as the U.S. Secret Service.

His experience includes close protection, advance operations, motorcade coordination, and threat assessments for high-profile clients ranging from elected officials to international dignitaries, business leaders, and elite athletes, including the U.S. Olympic Track & Field team.

Lt. Wellmann also served as a Personal Security Officer and Detail Leader for the Marion County Prosecutor, overseeing all aspects of protective operations. A recognized trainer, he developed and led IMPD’s Dignitary Protection School and continues to support public and private sector security teams as an instructor and consultant. He now serves as Lieutenant of the Indiana University Executive Protection Unit.
