Biography
Leslie Slone serves as the Director for Safety and Security for IU Public Safety. In this role, she utilizes Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design concepts and practices to create physical security designs to enhance the safety and security of IU community members and facilities. These efforts often involve working collaboratively with IU architects, facilities operations personnel, facilities occupants, and IUPD to understand physical and situational vulnerabilities and develop strategies to reduce or remove them.
Prior to working directly in physical security, Leslie was a member of the IU Police Department for 25 years. During this time, she enjoyed being part of a series of firsts, such as the Police Mountain Bike Patrol Team, Field Training Officer program, and first female Detective Sergeant. She was an Adjunct Instructor for Ivy Tech Community College for 18 years and was an Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board Instructor, teaching in the IU Police Academy for 18 years. Pivotally, Leslie received substantial training in crime prevention and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, studying the latter with renowned criminologist, author, and former director of the National Crime Prevention Institute, Timothy Crowe.
