A Roadmap for IU Public Safety
This Strategic Plan serves as a roadmap and touchstone for IU Public Safety leaders to revisit and is a testament to the organization's commitment to acheiving its objectives to make a tangible difference in the safety and security of the IU community. This plan is guided by the core principles of IU 2030: The IU Strategic Plan.
Outcomes
Working toward the objectives and goals described below will result in the following outcomes:
- IU Public Safety employees will be empowered to do their best work as they are supported by the department through engagement, professional development, and process efficiencies.
- IU Public Safety will be a unified department, with standardized responses, processes, customer service, and achieving accreditation.
- IU Public Safety will engage the campus community to help stakeholders better understand the services and resources available across all IU campuses.
- IU Public Safety will be known for proactive communication before and during events and emergencies.
- IU Public Safety will impact all IU campuses by maintaining safety in the campus community.
Empowered Employees
The tenets to achieve empowered employees are retention, recruitment, training, and resources.
- The goals driven by retention include improving staff morale through the creation of new staff recognition initiatives, continuing and expanding staff listening sessions, and hosting departmental outings.
- The goals driven by recruitment include gaining knowledge of where to recruit, recruiting diverse staff, adding additional staff, and implementing policies for female staff.
- The goals driven by training include creating additional scenario-based training, collaborative training across IU Public Safety, and ensuring that staff stationed at regional campuses receive enhanced training opportunities.
- The goals driven by resources include providing resources to aid in staff efficiencies, understanding what resources staff need for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and providing staff with resources and discussion to grow professionally.
Unified Department
The tenets to achieve a unified department are accreditation, standardizing processes, and one IUPD statewide vision.
- The goals driven by accreditation include communicating the reason for accreditation to officers, achieving 100% of standards and proofs of compliance for accreditation, and completing the mock assessment.
- The goals driven by standardizing processes include researching and collaborating to standardize processes related to threat assessment, access control, online modules, and creating process manuals.
- The goals driven by the IUPD Statewide Vision include continued meetings to discuss issues as one IUPD and successfully completing the IUPA 50th Class and Alumni Reception and Reunion.
Engaged Campus Community
The tenets to achieve an engaged campus community are community engagement programs and enhanced campus services.
- The goals driven by community engagement programs include developing IU Public Safety information for statewide distribution, connecting with campus contacts for DEI initiatives, increasing the number of community engagement events participated in to build relationships.
- The goals driven by enhanced campus services include providing the IU community with services including enhanced policies on mental health calls, social worker outreach, and continued meetings with campus groups and resident assistants.
Proactive Communication
The tenets to achieve proactive communication are marketing and safety-related news.
- The goals driven by marketing include increasing marketing efforts to represent the department, streamlining social media, and developing a tracking mechanism for trending topics.
- The goals driven by safety-related news include establishing connections with local news media sources and establishing a strategic communications plan and calendar.
Safe Campus Community
The tenets to achieve a safe campus community are identifying gaps that the department will work to fill and providing campus training.
- The goals driven by identifying gaps include researching gaps and providing needed services to all campuses and strengthening staff expertise.
- The goals driven by campus training include developing and executing comprehensive training and exercise programs, plans, and meetings related to emergency preparedness.
