Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

Safer spaces, by design

We are always looking for ways to improve the safety and security of classrooms, buildings, outdoor areas—essentially any public space—across any of our campuses.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) uses lighting, landscaping, and other elements of architectural and outdoor design to increase the safety and security of buildings and communities. CPTED’s theories have been used in urban and community planning since the 1960s and have been shown to be effective in reducing crime and increasing positive social interaction.

We regularly review the uses and security risks of existing spaces in the Indiana University community to find solutions that will make them safer.
