Automated external defibrillator (AED)
An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy that stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.
Several AED-related training and education resources exist on the IUPUI campus. Environmental Health and Safety at IUPUI (EHS-IUPUI) offers free presentations and learning sessions, plus American Heart Association CPR/AED and first aid classes for $25 per person. EHS-IUPUI will also provide assistance to departments wishing to purchase AEDs — both before the product selection and coordinating the installation of the cabinet equipment.
Let EHS-IUPUI assist you with the proper acquisition, uniformity, maintenance, training, and notification of emergency medical services. Three individuals on the IUPUI campus have been saved by AEDs in recent years -- AEDs save lives.
To arrange a presentation or training, please email ehs@iupui.edu.
