Medical emergencies

  • Do not move a seriously injured person unless they are in a life-threatening situation.
  • Know your street address so that you can give it to emergency services.
  • In the event of a serious injury or illness, immediately call 911 (9-911 will also work from campus). Give as much information as possible regarding:
    • the nature of the illness or injury
    • the victim’s location
    • whether the victim is conscious, breathing, bleeding
    • the victim’s injuries
    • any chemicals or radioactive materials involved
  • Send someone to the building’s entrance to meet emergency personnel.
  • Only trained personnel should provide first aid or CPR. If first aid or CPR training is desired, see below for contact information listed by campus.
  • Locate the nearest Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Ambulance services can always be reached by dialing 911.
  • For injuries that do not require urgent attention, visit a local clinic or your campus health center.

Mental health emergency

If you are concerned about a member of the university community, call Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) (see contact information for specific campuses below).

CAPS is not a 24-hour facility. Contact the emergency help numbers listed below or the IU Police Department for 24-hour assistance.

Emergency help: Crisis & Suicide Hotline at 317-251-7575 (IUPUI) or 812-855-5711 (IU Bloomington). Additional resources may be found below by clicking on the specific campus.

Students: CAPS provides professional mental health services for students. Further information can be obtained below.

Staff: The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to all full-time employees and members of their household. Further information can be obtained below.

Behavioral Consultation Team (BCT): The BCT is designed for early intervention regarding behavioral issues to help support the health, safety, and success of the campus community. The BCT can be contacted by calling the specific phone number listed with the specific campus below. If the concern is urgent, please call IUPD at 911.

Automated external defibrillator (AED)

An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy that stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

Training Resources

Several AED-related training and education resources exist on the IU Indianapolis campus. Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) at IU Indianapolis offers free presentations and learning sessions, plus American Heart Association CPR/AED and first aid classes for $25 per person. EHS will also provide assistance to departments wishing to purchase AEDs — both before the product selection and coordinating the installation of the cabinet equipment.

Let EHS assist you with the proper acquisition, uniformity, maintenance, training, and notification of emergency medical services. Three individuals on the IU Indianapolis campus have been saved by AEDs in recent years -- AEDs save lives.

To arrange a presentation or training, please email ehs@iupui.edu.
