Law enforcement agencies constantly engage the community through their interactions and responses. However, proactive activities, such as forums, safety presentations, community meetings and participation in community functions, are also important for IUPD. Community engagement and partnerships are essential for effective community policing.
One key challenge we face in providing open data about community engagement is that it is often not tracked within police information systems. It’s most often unrelated to a call for service, a crime incident, or some other type of tracked process. Community engagement is, necessarily, proactive and preventative in its nature.
