Revised Date: 05/24/2024
Rescinds: G2.1.2 – 7/30/2021; F2.1.2 – 7/30/2021
Purpose
To provide the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) with a standard Affirmation of Duty.
General Order
All non-sworn employees who will perform public safety duties without law enforcement or police powers (e.g. cadets and security officers), prior to assuming their duties, will take and subsequently abide by a declaration to enforce institutional policies and support the missions of Indiana University and the Indiana University Police Department.
The Affirmation of Duty for sworn officers is included in the Oath of Office described in G2.1.1 Oath of Office.
The superintendent for public safety, a deputy superintendent, the division’s highest-ranking leader, or their designee may administer the Affirmation of Duty.
The non-sworn employee will stand, raise their right hand, and repeat the Affirmation of Duty. The employee may choose to “affirm” or “swear,” and may elect to state or not state “So help me God.” If the employee elects to “swear” the Affirmation, it is concluded with “So help me God.” If an employee elects to “affirm” the Affirmation, then “So help me God” is stricken and not included in the Affirmation.
A signed copy of F2.1.2-1 Affirmation of Duty will be placed in the employee’s personnel file.
