Chapter: Chapter 04: Conduct and Professional Standards
Sub-Chapter: 4.2 - Internal Affairs Investigations
Effective Date: 05/02/2022
Revised Date: 09/16/2024
Rescinds: G4.2.8 – 5/2/2022
Purpose
To provide the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) with guidance surrounding the specific time limit and provisions for extensions for an internal affairs investigation.
General Order
The IUPD has identified the time limit in which to complete an internal affairs investigation. Based on the specific complaint, the investigation may require an extension for completion.
Time Limit for Internal Affairs Investigations (4.2.8)
To achieve a timely resolution to a complaint, a level two (internal affairs) complaint investigation should be completed within ninety (90) calendar days.
The time frame for completion begins the day the major responsible for internal affairs assigns an internal affairs case number. The completion date is the date by which the major responsible for internal affairs renders a determination pursuant to G4.2.11 Conclusion of Fact.
Extending Internal Affairs Investigation Timelines (4.2.8)
In cases where extenuating circumstances exist, the time limit may be extended by the major responsible for internal affairs. An extension request, as well as the approval or denial of such request, will be in electronic form and noted in the log within the Professional Standards System (PSS).
The employee(s) who is(are) the subject of the investigation, the superintendent for public safety, the deputy superintendents, and the senior director for public safety will be notified of the extension. The complainant(s) will be notified of the extension as a part of the periodic status reports pursuant to G4.2.9 Inform Complainant of Status.
