G4.3.2 Appeal Procedures in Disciplinary Action
Chapter: Chapter 04: Conduct and Professional Standards
Sub-Chapter: 4.3 - Accountability System
Effective Date: 04/29/2024
Revised Date: 04/29/2024
Rescinds: None
Purpose
To describe the appeal process for disciplinary action for all employees of the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD).
General Order
The IUPD encourages open lines of communication between employees and their supervisors. Employees are encouraged to promptly discuss with their supervisor any work-related problems. Most problems can be resolved through informal discussions between the employee and their supervisor. However, in some instances this may not be possible, and it is appropriate to turn to the formal grievance resolution process contained in applicable Indiana University (IU) policy.
Procedures
Supervisors and employees are expected to resolve problems as they arise and should work to resolve problems, if possible. However, it is recognized that there may be grievances that may only be resolved after a formal review and appeal.
Employees may file a grievance in accordance with the applicable IU Problem-Grievance Resolution policy. The applicable IU policy contains the criteria to file the complaint. Grievances will be initiated using the appropriate IU Grievance form.
Grievances will be processed in accordance with the detailed procedures described within the applicable IU Problem-Grievance Resolution policy based on employee’s position classification. These procedures include identification of issues that are and are not grievable, time limits, stages of the grievance procedure, and union representation if applicable.
The senior director for public safety is responsible for the coordination of all grievance procedures. All grievance records will be maintained with IU Human Resources in accordance with applicable records policies and procedures.
