Purpose
To provide the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) with guidance for establishing and maintaining a training committee.
General Order
The IUPD will establish a training committee that will provide input related to the content and delivery methods of department training.
Statement of the committee’s responsibilities (6.1.1 a)
The committee has the authority to review the overall training provided and needed for the IUPD, including sworn and non-sworn employees. The committee may assist the director for professional standards and education by planning, developing, and researching training that may be of benefit to the department.
Selecting and Replacing Committee Members (6.1.1 b)
The training committee will be chaired by the director for professional standards and education and will consist of no more than ten (10) members, to include at least:
- the assistant director for professional standards and education
- a command staff member from the Bloomington or IUPUI division
- a command staff member from a regional division
- an IUPD field training coordinator
- the director for dispatch communications or designee
- an IU faculty member
- an IU staff member
- a representative from the IU Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs
- a member from IU student government
A single member may satisfy more than one of these requirements. IUPD employees who are members of the training committee will report directly to the director for professional standards and education while performing duties related to the training committee. (6.1.1 d)
The director for professional standards and education will review the composition of the committee at the end of each calendar year and appoint members to include a representative cross section of the department. In the event a committee member becomes ineligible to serve on the committee, the director for professional standards and education will appoint a replacement.
Connection of the Training Function to the Committee (6.1.1 c)
The committee will meet quarterly and will be responsible for making recommendations to the director for professional standards and education for training programs as well as assisting with the evaluation of existing training.
