Purpose
To state the specialized training requirements for certain assignments within the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD).
General Order
Specialized training is designed to provide the skills, knowledge, and abilities in addition to those taught in either basic or other in-service programs. The IUPD requires personnel who are assigned to certain assignments or perform certain specialized duties to receive relevant training as soon as practicable.
Assignments requiring specialized training (6.3.3 a)
Specialized training will be provided to personnel assigned to certain positions and/or specialty functions. Positions requiring specialized training include, but may not be limited to:
- Accident reconstructionist
- All Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board instructors (primary, psychomotor skills, senior, master)
- All specialized training instructors including, but not limited to:
- Active Aggressor
- Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE)
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED)
- Electronic control weapons (i.e. TASER)
- Fair & Impartial Policing (FIP)
- Integrating Communications, Assessment and Tactics (ICAT)
- Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)
- Procedural Justice (PJ)
- Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST)
- Armorer
- Aviation unit pilot
- Bicycle officer
- Breath test operator
- Canine handlers
- Communications training officer
- Detective
- Dignitary protection
- Drug recognition expert
- Emergency response group member
- Evidence technician
- Field training officer
- Honor guard member
- Motorcycle officer
- Public information officer
- Any other position designated as specialized by the superintendent for public safety
Training program by assignment (6.3.3 b)
Employees serving in a specialized assignment role will complete the appropriate specialized training relevant to the assignment in a timely manner. Appropriate training will be determined by the director for professional standards and education or designee based upon the requirements of the assignment. This training will aid the employee in:
- development and/or enhancement of the skills, knowledge, and abilities particular to the specialized assignment; and
- their understanding of the IUPD’s rules, regulations, general orders, and procedures and laws specifically related to the specialty assignment.
On-going training and/or re-certification requirements in specialty areas are determined by the certifying organization or IUPD’s professional standards and education staff. It is the responsibility of the individual employee to be aware of and ensure all these requirements are met in order to continue in the assignment.
