Purpose
To provide the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) with guidance concerning reassigning officers who are involved in use of force incidents which result in serious bodily injury or death to any person.
General Order
Any IUPD officer whose use of force results in serious bodily injury or death to any person will be reassigned from regular duties pending a documented administrative review of the incident as specified in G7.1.11 Administrative Review of Use of Force (7.1.12).
In addition to the officer who used force, other employees involved in the incident may be reassigned from regular duties pending a documented administrative review of the incident as specified in G7.1.11 Administrative Review of Use of Force.
The superintendent for public safety has the authority to place the officer(s) on temporary inter-agency duty or grant an administrative leave of absence after a use of force incident which results in serious bodily injury or death to any person. This action is in the best interests of the IUPD, the community, and the officer(s).
This directive will not interfere with any departmentally sponsored employee assistance programs.
Definition
Serious Bodily Injury – defined by Indiana Code 35-31.5-2-292 means bodily injury that creates a substantial risk of death or that causes serious permanent disfigurement, unconsciousness, extreme pain, permanent or protracted loss or impairment of the function of a bodily member or organ, or loss of a fetus.
