Public Safety Advisory - Coronavirus - February 17, 2020

Monday, February 17, 2020

Indiana University continues to monitor the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (recently named COVID-19) outbreak very closely.

There are still no confirmed or suspected cases in Indiana or at IU.

There are no new travel restrictions that have been put in place by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) or the U.S. Department of State.

As reported by several news outlets, there is anxiety throughout Southeast Asia resulting in some countries placing restrictions on travel. It is possible that if you travel to Southeast Asia, you may have difficulty returning to the United States due to the rules and procedures those countries have put in place.

If you plan to travel to Southeast Asia in the coming months, we recommend the following:

  • Monitor travel restrictions very closely.
  • Consider alternative plans.
  • For programmed travel, ensure you are keeping the Office of Overseas Study, as well as the Office of International Services, informed.

Visit the ASEAN Briefing website for the latest country-specific updates regarding coronavirus COVID-19.

We remain grateful to the many members of the IU community who have taken precautions to prevent the introduction of coronavirus COVID-19 into our community. The Office of Public Safety and Institutional Assurance continues to work daily with local, state, and federal health officials to monitor the situation.

Tips for staying healthy

The largest health concern on IU campuses remains common influenza.

In light of cold and flu season and this current outbreak of coronavirus COVID-19, follow these best practices to help prevent the spread of illnesses:

  • Stay away from ill people and stay away from others when you are ill.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with your elbow or tissue.
  • Get an annual flu (influenza) shot through your primary care provider, local minute clinic, or campus health center.

Visit the Protect IU website for more tips, information, and frequently asked questions about coronavirus COVID-19.

Resources on the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Indiana State Department of Health has information specific to COVID-19 and has established a COVID-19 hotline phone number. Call 317-233-7125 with questions or concerns regarding coronavirus COVID-19.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides more information about coronavirus COVID-19.
