Public Safety Advisory - Coronavirus - March 20, 2020

Friday, March 20, 2020

REVISED FOR CLARIFICATION: This message was intended primarily for a student audience to encourage limitations on travel to campus and participation in non-essential activities during the upcoming time of remote teaching.

IU’s physical campuses remain open.

When possible, supervisors are encouraged to allow employees to work remotely. For those still working on campus, we ask you to continue practicing social distancing in support of the health of the IU community. Please visit the HR COVID-19 website for guidance and frequently asked questions to HR-related topics.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the White House and the state of Indiana are providing guidance not only for businesses and organizations, but for individuals, as well, in the midst of the wide community spread of coronavirus COVID-19 across the U.S.

The most important guidance right now is for everyone to stay home.

Additional guidance includes:

  • Restaurants and bars having take-out or delivery service only through the end of March
  • Keeping all gatherings to 10 people or less
  • Postponing all travel plans
  • Canceling all non-urgent medical appointments or surgeries

Why everyone needs to take this seriously

We all have the ability and responsibility to help stop the community spread of COVID-19. The longer it takes for everyone to heed the advice of staying home and social distancing, the longer we’ll continue to see the spread of COVID-19 and the various disruptions to our daily routines.

U.S. Department of State issues level 4 global travel alert

Yesterday, the Department of State raised its global travel alert to level 4, warning against all international travel due to COVID-19.

How you can help stop the community spread of COVID-19

Social distancing: stay out of places with groups of people, avoid large events and keep a distance of 6 feet between you and anyone else when possible. Only go out for essential items.

Self-monitoring: check for a fever by taking your temperature twice a day and be aware of any developing cough or difficulty breathing. Continue practicing social distancing and stay home. If you develop a fever, cough or difficulty breathing while self-monitoring, call your health care provider for further instructions.

Self-quarantine: if you know you’ve been exposed or have likely been exposed to COVID-19 but do not yet have symptoms, you will be asked to self-quarantine. This means separating yourself from others (even within the same household) to prevent the spread of the virus.

If you’re sick: if you have any symptoms, whether you have officially been tested for COVID-19 or not, the CDC offers a number of recommendations to help stop the community spread of COVID-19 and let you know when it’s safe to stop isolation and resume normal activities.
