Students, faculty and staff at Indiana University can now use the Guardian safety app to access personal safety resources and to more easily reach police. The free Rave Guardian app is available at the Apple Store and Google Play.

The app is available for use by all currently registered Indiana University students and employees of the university. Subscribers must use an IU email address to log in.

Yes. IU-Notify emergency alerts are sent directly to the Guardian app as a push notification. This is intended to be another means of reaching people during an emergency. We encourage all faculty, staff, and students who have not already done so to opt-in for RAVE ALERT text and voice messages on their mobile device at https://go.iu.edu/notify. Location services must be on.
No. Your privacy is of the utmost importance. You can only be located if you have asked for help. Guardian location information is only enabled when you choose to make an emergency call or send a tip. Only your chosen social guardians know your location when using the Safe Walk Timer.
No. Your social guardians are friends and family, and you can choose them to be contacted in the event that your Safe Walk Timer expires.
Yes. If you use the safe walk timer, you can choose guardians from your phone’s contacts. They will have the capability to track your status. The guardian will receive a notification via text message when you request them as a guardian and they must accept your request.
When using the Safe Walk Timer, the user will receive a reminder text message five minutes before the timer expires. If it expires, a message immediately goes to your chosen guardian(s), and they can call your cell phone.
You can choose whether to send a tip anonymously each time you send a text or photo tip.
To send text or photo tips anonymously, tap the “IUPD – Tips Via Text” button and slide the button to “Go Anonymous,” which will cause your screen to go to a dark background. By submitting a tip anonymously, the IU Police Department will not be able to see your location, name, phone number, or any other identifying information about you.
If you do not slide the “Go Anonymous” button, your location, name, phone number, and profile information are displayed on a map to the IU Police Department when you submit a tip.
Yes. Rave Mobile Safety (the provider of the Guardian app) uses the latest in security technologies and processes to ensure that all of your information is secure and private. Rave also undergoes regular security audits to ensure the data is secure.
Yes. The IUPD – Tips via Text feature works regardless of your location. However, if you have an emergency at an off-campus location, you should dial 9-1-1. If you send a tip that is not on campus, the information will be forwarded to the appropriate off-campus law enforcement agency.
Absolutely. When on campus, you can contact IUPD at 812-855-4111 or use any blue light phone. You can also go to the IUB police station at 1469 E. 17th Street. When you are off campus, you should call 911 for emergency assistance.
If you are not on the Bloomington campus, please go to your campus police station.
Once the app is installed, the basic profile features of Guardian work on any iPhone or Android smartphone running on any U.S.-based mobile carrier network. Guardian can locate most smartphone devices on the AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon networks. Even if Guardian cannot determine your phone’s location, all other profile information will be made available to the IU Police Department when you use Guardian.
We recommend that you allow push notifications from Guardian to take advantage of features like receiving alerts when your Safe Walk Timer is about to expire or when someone has requested you as a guardian.
Some factors that can affect GPS accuracy include whether you’re calling or texting from inside a building or from a dead spot, the strength of your signal, whether your phone is GPS-enabled, the type or quality of your phone, and the phone carrier.
When possible, you should always provide a detailed location via text or voice to ensure IUPD personnel can quickly reach you when Guardian is activated.
Once you are no longer a member of the Indiana University community and are removed from the IU-Notify system, you are no longer eligible to use the Guardian app.
You cannot directly update or change your phone number in the Guardian app. Instead, you must update your number in IU-Notify by going to one.iu.edu and searching for IU-Notify. Guardian will be updated once you’ve updated your information in IU-Notify.
Guardian will also work with Wi-Fi, but its features are limited without cell phone service. You will still be able to send a tip or use the Safe Walk Timer. However, a voice call will not be placed should you make an emergency call. The Call 911 feature in the app works only with cell phone service.
