CRIME NOTICE - REPORTED ATTEMPTED ROBBERY

May 28, 2024
In compliance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, a crime notice is being issued for a reported attempted robbery.
REPORTED OFFENSE:
On May 28, 2024, IUPD received a report of an attempted robbery in Lot 85 at the corner of N Blackford St. and W New York St. Just before the report was received at 5:30 a.m., an IU employee (victim) was coming into work. The victim was getting out of their vehicle when the suspect approached them and attempted to take the victim’s keys out of their hand, saying, “I am taking your vehicle.” The victim pulled away and then began honking their horn, causing the suspect and another individual to flee the area westbound.
TIME AND LOCATION OF OFFENSE:
Approximately 5:30 a.m. in Lot 85 on May 28, 2024.
SUSPECT:
The suspect was described as a white male, with a face tattoo, wearing a dark hoodie. The other individual was only described as wearing dark clothing.

In an effort to keep yourself and others safe, please consider the following safety tips:
- Be aware of your surroundings. Keeping your ears clear of headphones and hands free of packages or bags.
- Do not lend your keys to anyone you do not know and trust.
- Always hide valuables and money so they cannot be seen through windows.
- Park in well-lit, regularly frequented areas if possible, and lock all doors and roll up windows.
- Always report suspicious behavior. IU has blue light emergency phones located throughout the campus that connect directly to IUPD.
- Install quality video surveillance cameras and alarms.
- Install a GPS tracking device.
- Never leave your car running.
- Contact dealerships regarding anti-theft options for the vehicle.
- Keep information, such as the make, model, model year, license plate and Vehicle Identification Number accessible in the event your vehicle is stolen.

- The IMPD has provided steering wheel locks to the IUPD Indianapolis division for distribution. These are available for students residing on campus and faculty and staff who are Indianapolis residents. They can be picked up Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. while supplies last. Vehicle owners should bring their registration. IUPUI on-campus residents are considered (temporary) Indianapolis residents and qualify to receive a free lock. Quantities are limited.
