CRIME NOTICE - REPORTED MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT
IU Bloomington Crime Notice:
November 15, 2024
In compliance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, a crime notice is being issued for motor vehicle thefts – specifically electric bikes and electric scooters.
REPORTED OFFENSE:
The Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) continues to receive reports of electric scooter and electric bike thefts, or motor vehicle thefts (MVT). For Indiana Code and Clery Act requirements, electric bikes/scooters are considered motor vehicles. On the dates below, the suspect(s) stole electric bikes/scooters. The below incidents were reported to IUPD between November 8 and November 13. Throughout the semester, there have also been numerous manual powered bicycles stolen that are not documented in this notice.
TIME AND LOCATION OF OFFENSE:
- Between November 5 and 7, an e-bike was stolen from the Foster Harper bike rack.
- November 8, an e-scooter was stolen from outside Simon Music Library at the south side bike rack.
- November 11, an e-scooter was stolen from outside Franklin Hall at the east bike rack.
- November 12, an e-scooter was stolen from outside Swain Hall at the east bike racks.
- Between November 8 and 10, an e-scooter was stolen from outside Eigenmann Hall.
SUSPECT:
There is no suspect information for any of the above reported cases.

SAFETY TIPS:
While this notice is being issued due to electric bike/scooter thefts, the following tips are applicable to manual pedal bikes as well. To keep yourself and others safe, please consider the following safety tips:
- Record the make, model, and serial number of your electric bicycle or scooter and store it in a safe place.
- Lock your electric bicycle or scooter using at least one U-style lock.
- Lock both wheels and frame to the bike rack and remove seat.
- Lock your electric bicycle or scooter in a well-lit area on a bike rack.
- Report suspicious persons hanging around bike racks to the police.

- When available, utilize bike hub storage, such as the Ballantine Bike Hub or bike lockers available through IU Housing placed throughout campus.
- IUPD is providing U-Locks free of charge by visiting IUPD at 1469 E. 17th Street.
- Additionally, you can obtain a U-Lock from Transportation Demand Management by emailing commute@iu.edu.
