Biography
Major Heather Braun serves as the Director for Accreditation and Strategy for the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD). In this senior leadership role, Major Braun leads accreditation efforts to maintain IUPD’s standing as the first and largest unified police department serving multiple campuses to achieve IACLEA Accreditation. She directs the development and implementation of law enforcement policies and procedures that adhere to national standards, oversees Clery Act and crime reporting compliance, and manages public safety grant opportunities.
Major Braun began her career in law enforcement with the IUPD Cadet Program in 2008 and graduated from the Indiana University Police Academy in 2009. Over her distinguished career with IUPD, she has steadily advanced through the ranks—serving as Patrol Officer, Interim Public Safety Support Manager, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and now Major.
Throughout her career, Major Braun has established herself as a nationally recognized expert in university public safety and federal regulatory compliance. As an administrative lieutenant, she was directly responsible for Clery Act compliance for IU Indianapolis, IU Columbus, IU Fort Wayne, and the IU School of Medicine, while also overseeing IUPD-Indianapolis’ records and crime analysis functions.
Major Braun also serves on the IACLEA Accreditation Commission, the governing body empowered to develop, revise, and interpret accreditation standards and render official accreditation decisions for campus public safety agencies seeking to achieve accreditation. In this capacity, she contributed directly to the development of the IACLEA Accreditation Basic Standards Manual, helping shape national best practices for higher education law enforcement and public safety.
In recognition of her leadership and contributions to campus safety, Major Braun received the National Association of Clery Compliance Officers and Professionals (NACCOP) Clery Compliance Officer of the Year Award for 4-Year Institutions in 2018, as well as multiple IUPD Meritorious Service Awards in 2019 and 2025.
