IU Police arrest suspect in attempted sexual assault, applaud bystander intervention

BLOOMINGTON – Case No. 234812, On November 10, 2023, at 5:34 p.m., Indiana University Police were called to Dunn Woods, South of the Student Building on the IU Bloomington campus to respond to an attempted sexual assault in progress. Bystanders who were nearby witnessed the attempted assault and intervened. Officers located and detained the suspect, Brian Jones, at the intersection of 4th Street and Lincoln Street. Jones is not affiliated with the university. The victim, an IU student, was provided with support and resources. Jones was transported to the Monroe County Jail for the charges of attempted rape (level 3 felony), sexual battery (level 6 felony), battery with injury (A misdemeanor), confinement (A misdemeanor), and criminal trespass (A misdemeanor).
The IU Police Department commends the quick action of the bystanders that stepped in when they saw a harmful situation and for swiftly contacting law enforcement. IU is dedicated to preventing and responding to all forms of sexual violence.
