In order to promote safety and security for students and employees, a Public Safety Advisory is being issued for a Phishing Scam, that has generated fraud cases to the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD).
REPORTED INCIDENT:
On 04/06/2021 as of approximately 3:17 PM the IUPD has received eleven reports of fraud linked to an online phishing incident.
TIME AND LOCATION OF INCIDENT:
Earlier today, 04/06/2021, many IU employees received a phishing message with the subject line "Re: IU Employee Support Program. "This was not a phishing simulation, but instead an actual phishing message intended to do harm. Please do not click the links in the message.
"Green Dot COVID-19 Benefits" referenced in the message is a scam, and IUPD urges you to always be wary when a message asks for personal information. Please remember that no one at IU will ever ask you for critical, sensitive information over email (such as your Social Security number, driver’s license number, etc.).
SUSPECTS:
There are no identified suspects at this time.
If you submitted information to the phishing site linked from the email, immediately contact the University Information Policy Office at it-incident@iu.edu and your local IUPD campus office.
Phishing explained
Phishing scams are typically fraudulent email messages appearing to come from legitimate enterprises (for example, your university, your internet service provider, your bank).
These messages usually direct you to a spoofed website or otherwise get you to divulge private information (for example, passphrase, credit card, or other account updates). The perpetrators then use this private information to commit identity theft.
